COUNSELLING SERVICES ARE GST EXEMPT IN BC.
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) confirmed that registered clinical counsellors (RCC's) in BC are exempt from collecting GST on psychotherapy, as of December 20, 2024. GST exemption on counselling was passed into law in July 2024, however, it only applied in provinces where counsellors are regulated through a college and it was unclear how it applied to registered counsellors in BC. The BC Association of Clinical Counsellors worked with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, which confirmed to the CRA that RCC's have substantial equivalency in qualifications, for the purposes of tax exemption. The CRA advised registered counsellors in BC to stop charging GST as of December 20th and indicated this decision was not retroactive to the original legislation.
